A volunteer and collaborative effort to bring information about shared microscopy facilities to the University of Arizona and the community.

HOME PAGE

  • slide show - wish it was automatic and/or at least showed random images. Not a big fan of the caption display.
  • news - I like having the UA news separate. Overall it's OK, I don't love it, but the Quickstart views are tricky to work with.
  • DYKT? - not great, but not bad either.
  • Menus - I like these. More granularity than before and the upper right (quick links type) menu is terrific.
  • Footer - tight and intentionally kept simple. I like how this came out.

FACILITIES/EQUIPMENT/STAFF
Do a careful review of each facility, double check against existing websites and any other information that's "out there". The goal is to make the entire sub-site more useful to the user. Work with manager/director.

  • Expand "other equipment"
  • Maybe create "other facilities we work with" - which could include non-microscopy facilities
  • Figure out ways to help people find sub-sets of equipment that would meet specific needs TOOL FINDER

  • Keep news/events up-to-date
  • Review/update Learn section
  • LINK CHECKS!

AZ Barrios Drupal 9 theme - regions

2022-11-12

Moved over four pieces of content that were current on the D7 website as of this date. As an example, this is how they display.

This seems to work well. I chose to use the NEWS content type because EVENT wanted to collect and display too much information that wasn't necessary.

In NEWS content there is a SUMMARY FIELDS option on the right, use this to set the Expiration Date. This will allow us to keep the home page list current.

NOTE - I'm thinking that on-site events might still use the EVENT content type, but how to mix the two together in one view could be problematic.

Built a demonstration core to test out some ideas. I requested feedback from Brooke & Patty.

Brooke Massani responded:

First, I absolutely love the left side menu! The new Quickstart2 template is much more mobile friendly, but when you have those side bar menus display at the top of the page for mobile users. Keeping that in mind, I would want the menu to be short. I would look at ways to collapse the different levels in the menu so it looks better on devices. If you have a menu item for each instrument it could get really long. I think you can move those down a level in the structure and then change the settings on the sidebar to have some levels open and some collapsed. The names of the instruments used in the menu will also need to be short to look good (i.e. Leica DMI600 or Invert microscope) and I think this will be tricky. I like the descriptive names better than the Vendor and Model Number names.

The colored title bars are nice and sticking with the same color for all Staff pages for example is a good idea!  DONE!

I suggest adding accordions on the facility pages to display information in a similar location and format for each without making the page super long under the description. Some I would like to see are “Acknowledge the Core,” “Covid-19 Updates” and “Contact Us.” There may be more content that would be good in an accordion at the bottom of the page too.  DONE!

I would add AZ Core Network to your Utilities Links at the top of the page.  DONE!

I also really like that at the bottom you have the Administration working with a logo. It looks nice and gives credit to the units who support these facilities.  DONE!

I have actually been co-leading our department website redesign, so have been working with QuickStart2 for the last year or so. The new CBC DNS cutover is today (its not working yet though). Definitely not an expert, but I really enjoy working on these. Once the work on the department website subsides, I can help you some on the data transfer.

Added Taxonomies and defined how I'll be using them:

  • MA_Location_TAGS - for location/building names (Pages - Equipment, Pages - Cores, Person content)
  • MA_Equipment_functional_TAGS - tagging to show the capabilities and key functionalities of the equipment, more like free tagging (try not to be redundant!). This list is not as structured as the taxonomies on the Drupal 7 website, but sometimes I think that schema was too rigid. For now I have the ability to see all the content tagged a certain way turned off until I can figure out how to greatly simplify the listings. (Pages - Equipment only at this point)
  • MA page type - this is simply a way to differentiate a CORE page from either an EQUIPMENT - Microscope or an EQUIPMENT - Other. Solely used for building specific views. (Pages - Equipment, Pages - Cores, Person content)
  • TAGS - using this for grouping things by Core Name (Pages - Equipment, Pages - Cores, Person content)

Added the ability to use these taxonomies to the PAGE content type. It's a bit messy at the moment, and it will likely get worse as these lists get longer.

Built a couple of VIEWS.

Built the Imaging Cores - Optical. Created a banner (block) for all the related content of this core that includes a menu. Configured the side menu to not show up.

2022-11-19

Added the Keck Center and Brooke. Also additional equipment for IC-Optical.

Expanded the capabilities tagging

Set up a combo view such that IC-Optical can list microscopes and all other equipment.

TO-DO
  • Try to clean up the taxonomy selection fields. Might need to give the selection options a description to remind me (and others) what they are used for.
  • Once there are more Cores, change the FACILITIES menu item to link to a VIEW.
  • Figure out how to make the Capabilities lists use the same CSS styling as the tag for Manager on my People page. It's a lot less obtrusive.
  • Wondering if the Optical, Electron/beam/force, Other Equipment capabilities tags need to be split into three lists. Might be easier for users. Of course, this is only an issue on the core 's home page and I'm wondering -  do we need all the capabilities listed there?

UA Microscopy Alliance - Core contacts Google Forms survey (6 total responses, sent out 10/2020)

The UA Microscopy Alliance website was launched in September of 2013 as an authoritative website for information about campus core microscopes for University of Arizona researchers and to support a community of people interested in microscopy. Another goal was to present a more coordinated-looking single website that would be easier to share with external users.

The word “Alliance” was chosen because the facilities are overseen by multiple entities like the VPR’s office, centers, colleges, & departments. There is nothing “official” that governs all of these cores except that the managers/directors have chosen to be part of this alliance. There is no other website quite like this at the UA for any other type of instrumentation.

After 7 years the website is due for an overhaul. Before we get too deep in the process, we are asking for your feedback.

HOME PAGE

http://microscopy.arizona.edu/
We tried to keep the home page simple, with these elements:
   •          Our Logo
   •          The menu
   •          Our mission statement
   •          A link to the COVID-19 status of the microscopy cores (added March 2020)
   •          A slideshow of pretty microscopy images
   •          Left side list of upcoming events/announcements
   •          Right side list of teasers from “Did You Know That?”
   •          Page header and footer

Is there anything that’s missing from the home page that you wish was here?

  • No
  • Seems fine
  • not really
  • Perhaps a little more information, that is provided by the mission statement. A brief summary of the Universities/institutes participating, types of imaging, what information is provided in the various headers and can be found on the site.

Is there anything on the home page that you think is unnecessary?

  • No
  • No. However, you might want to take Juliane down.
  • Seems fine
  • No- I really think you've hit it on the head with this content.

There is a contact link on the main menu (far right) and in the footer. The link goes to a web form for people to ask questions, however, it is typically only used a few times a year. Does the contact link need to be made more prominent in some way?

  • I think it would be a good idea
  • No.
  • No I think it is clear in the header if people need to use.
  • Seems fine
  • I get a lot of contacts directly from users, so I think most of them are just bypassing the contact link and going directly to the specific facility they want. I don't think it's the prominence of the link; I think it's just that most prospective users know roughly what they want and go straight to it.
  • That would be helpful- something like: please contact us if you have questions..

Is the ability to SEARCH by categories (see the search menu button) useful?

  • 100% - YES

Would you prefer a search box on the home page?

  • 67% - YES - add a free text search box to the home page
  • 33% - NO - keep search on a separate page

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE

These types of pages are currently interconnected with one another through the database that runs the website. Every facility has equipment & people (core managers/directors/staff), and people are associated with equipment & facilities, etc.
   •          Facilities – the unit that the equipment and people are part of.
   •          Equipment – the microscopes/instruments.
   •          People – typically the experts who oversee, provide support and train users on the equipment.

Are there better, more descriptive SINGLE WORDS for facilities, equipment, or people?

  • No
  • Nothing comes to mind
  • no
  • I don't think so, although including the core facility that the individual is associated with would be helpful.

FACILITY pages

http://microscopy.arizona.edu/facility/imaging-cores-marley-arl
This example page shows all the information that we typically collect about a facility.

Is there any information shown in the FACILITY example that is unnecessary? Is there any information that is missing that we should add?

  • No
  • I think there are too many blue links. Could we hide or make the categories a different color. Add an Acknowledge the Core section.
  • Seems fine
  • If it's available and the managers are willing, a schedule of rates would be helpful.
  • Nothing that is unnecessary. Can't think of anything more to add

EQUIPMENT pages

http://microscopy.arizona.edu/equipment/leica-sp5-ii-confocal-microscope-uacc
This example page shows all the information that we typically collect about an instrument.

Is there any information shown in the EQUIPMENT example that is unnecessary? Is there any information that is missing that we should add?

  • No
  • No, everything look great.
  • I think Acknowledge the Core should be more prominent and present on all equipment pages.
  • Seems fine
  • No, very detailed and appropriate.
  • Nothing that is unnecessary. Can't think of anything more to add

We have struggled with how to include specialty sample prep equipment and/or specific data processing software on this website. What complicates this is that some cores only have one microscope instrument and the rest of the equipment in that core is unrelated to microscopy.

  • 20% - Non-microscope equipment should just be listed in the Facility page's "about" section, or perhaps in the descriptive text section for the related instrument.
  • 80% - Create an "other equipment" list that links to the facility, but ONLY for equipment or software that is relevant to microscopy.
  • 20% - Create an "other equipment" list of all other equipment and/or software (in Microscopy Alliance cores)

PEOPLE pages

http://microscopy.arizona.edu/people/juliane-weber
This example page shows all the information that we typically collect about a core facility manager, director or staff person.

Is there any information shown in the PEOPLE example that is unnecessary? Is there any information that is missing that we should add?

  • No
  • No. But it's it possible to change my picture?
  • Seems fine
  • I get a 403 error from that page.
  • Including their role in a particular core would be helpful

EVENTS

We have featured over 180 events since the website went live. We have featured local events and announcements (including vendor seminars and on-site demonstrations) as well as regional and national courses. Events show up on the home page until the date has passed.
LIST OF EVENTS - http://microscopy.arizona.edu/events
EVENTS POLICY - http://microscopy.arizona.edu/events-policy

Are we missing anything? Is the RSS feed (found on the home page) necessary?

  • No
  • Seems fine
  • No, looks good.
  • I think this is great. Perhaps including instructions on how to add this to calendars?

DID YOU KNOW THAT...? pages

DYKT includes tips, tools, explanations, and information about things that are not quite microscopes, but might be of use to our users. A random selection of 4 DYKT items is displayed on the Microscopy Alliance home page every time it is loaded. This keeps the front page “fresh”.

DYKT list (33 items): http://microscopy.arizona.edu/learn/didyouknowthat

Are you aware of other microscopy-related bits of information that might be good to add to "Did You Know That...?"?

  • No
  • Company websites for training
  • AZCores.org site and the MOU agreement would be a good one to add
  • Seems fine

LEARN pages

The primary contributor to these pages has been Doug Cromey. Some of these pages and resources have been online for over two decades starting out at other UA web servers. http://microscopy.arizona.edu/learn

Recognizing that building resources like these (curated learning links, bibliographies, PDF handouts, etc) takes time and research, what do you wish you could find in this section?

  • I like the pdf files, your written info sheets company websites bibliographies
  • No
  • Seems fine
  • Related campus resources? Or some links to relevant departments, anyway.

A few final questions...

Thanks for making it this far, just a few more questions.

Our definition of a core facility: http://microscopy.arizona.edu/about

AZ Cores Network: https://azcores.ilab.agilent.com/partner_landing/17#/members

Is there any topic or information that you can think of that you would like to see on the UA Microscopy Alliance website?

  • No
  • No, I think we should keep it simple. They can email/call us if they have questions.
  • none
  • I don't think so- this has been and will continue to be a great resource.

Are we missing any University of Arizona microscopy cores or core facility microscopes?

  • Are the new ones going up?
  • I don't think so.
  • none that I know of
  • Not that I know of.
  • Not that I'm aware

The three state Universities are now sharing information about all of their cores in iLab (AZ Cores Network, see link above). Should the Microscopy Alliance expand to include cores from ASU and NAU?

  • 67% - Yes - include the cores from ASU and NAU
  • 33% - No - stick with just the UA-related cores

Should the UA Microscopy Alliance include some sort of "wish list" feature (something like an online discussion, questionnaire, or voting site) for visitors to suggest equipment that the campus doesn't have yet?

  • 50% - Yes
  • 50% - No

THANK YOU!
